New Methamphetamine Contamination Regulations in New Zealand — April 2026 Update
From April 2026, new official regulations in New Zealand governing methamphetamine contamination levels in residential and commercial properties will come into effect — bringing clear, enforceable thresholds for when professional meth decontamination is required.

What's Changing?
The new regulations set strict contamination limits for methamphetamine residue in properties.Under these guidelines, any property that tests above 15 µg per 100 cm² of methamphetamine contamination must undergo professional decontamination before being re-tenanted, sold, or occupied.This regulatory shift means that:Meth contamination is no longer a recommendation — it is a compliance requirement.Self-cleaning or DIY cleaning is no longer considered adequate.
Failure to decontaminate may expose property managers and owners to penalties, enforcement action, and legal liabilities.
Owners and Property Managers are expected to respond appropriately when tests indicate levels above acceptable limits.
Contamination testing is measured in micrograms per 100 square centimetres (µg/100 cm²) using approved swab tests.
Under the new regulations:

> 15 µg/100 cm² – Professional meth decontamination required before occupancy or tenancy
